Access to safe and reliable water continues to be a critical priority within communities in the Zabzugu District of Northern Ghana. While some progress has been made in improving water access, challenges remain in the effective management of water facilities and safe handling practices at the household level.
In several communities, the absence of functional Water and Sanitation Management Teams (WSMTs) has contributed to poor maintenance of water infrastructure, weak accountability, and frequent breakdowns. At the household level, unsafe practices in water transportation, storage, and usage continue to expose families to contamination and increase the risk of waterborne diseases.
To address these challenges, RACED Ghana, with funding support from World Vision Ghana under the Zabzugu Area Programme, implemented targeted interventions aimed at strengthening both community systems and household practices.

Household sensitization on safe water handling was conducted across the following communities: Sakpaleengibaani A & B, Subruni, Kpaligigbini, Ojoja, Benambado, Zokurli A & B, Sabare 1, Moncheni, Tasundo 1, and Tasundo 2. These activities focused on promoting proper water collection, transportation, storage, and usage to reduce contamination at the household level.
The intervention adopted participatory approaches, including community sensitization, focus group discussions, and practical demonstrations, to enhance understanding and encourage behavior change.
In total, 2,351 individuals (1,276 females and 1,073 males) were reached through these activities. Community members gained practical knowledge on safe water handling, storage, and use, contributing to reduced contamination risks and improved health outcomes.
In addition, Water and Sanitation Management Teams (WSMTs) were formed and trained in Tayundo and Gor-tanie. These teams were equipped with the skills and knowledge required to manage, maintain, and ensure the sustainability of water facilities in their respective communities.

Through these efforts, RACED Ghana continues to support communities in building sustainable systems and adopting practices that ensure safe water from source to consumption.
