In a time of global challenges, partnerships are proving essential for creating lasting solutions to complex issues. The BORDER Project—Building Opportunities, Resilience, Infrastructure Development, Ecosystems, and Social Cohesion for Refugees and Host Communities—is a shining example of collaboration for meaningful change. This transformative initiative is co-implemented by RACED Ghana, formerly Independent Minds Association, and World Vision Ghana, with funding from KfW, through the PATRIP Foundation and World Vision Germany.
Spanning a period of 36 months, the BORDER Project focuses on stabilizing communities, preventing conflict, and promoting resilience in Ghana’s Upper East and Upper West regions. With a funding allocation of €1.9 million, this project underscores the power of partnerships in driving peace and sustainable development.
Why the BORDER Project is Crucial
The Upper East and West regions, which share borders with Burkina Faso, face unique challenges that threaten both livelihoods and social harmony. These include:
- Rising Insecurity: Violence by non-state armed groups in Burkina Faso has forced over 8,000 asylum seekers to flee into Ghana, putting immense pressure on host communities.
- Environmental Decline: Deforestation, drought, and soil degradation are depleting the natural resources essential for agriculture and animal husbandry.
- Infrastructure Gaps: Basic facilities, including water installations and sanitation systems, are either non-existent or dysfunctional, further straining the already limited resources of host communities.
As the refugee population grows, tensions could rise without deliberate efforts to foster social cohesion and equitable resource management. The BORDER Project directly addresses these challenges with a comprehensive and inclusive approach.

- Improving Infrastructure for Resilience:
- Developing water, sanitation, and agricultural facilities that are climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable.
- Addressing gaps in essential infrastructure to improve living conditions.
- Promoting Economic Empowerment and Sustainability:
- Supporting 500 women and youth with entrepreneurial training and access to savings groups.
- Equipping farmers and livestock breeders with sustainable practices to boost productivity and income.
The Role of Collaboration
The BORDER Project’s collaborative framework highlights the strength of partnerships in tackling shared challenges. Implementing partners include:

From 12th to 15th November 2024, the BORDER Project hosted its start-up workshop at Mariam Hotel, bringing together all implementing partners and stakeholders. This event set the tone for the project, aligning everyone on its objectives, strategies, and expected outcomes.
RACED Ghana’s team played a pivotal role during the workshop, sharing insights from their experience and helping to refine the project’s approach to ensure maximum impact. The workshop also emphasized collaboration between stakeholders, reinforcing the collective commitment to transforming the lives of refugees and host communities.
